Primer: Unit 04, Lesson 1
Reading: Middle C
Goal: At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to identify a staff and count the 5 lines and 4 spaces from bottom to top. They should be able to visually differentiate between space notes and line notes. And they should understand which hand generally plays on the top vs. bottom staff. They should be able to identify Middle C on the Grand Staff, and play Middle C's with any finger of either hand, at any rhythmic value. This is the first of 3 "Anchor Notes" that the student should memorize. They should also know how to practice from their sightreading book.
Metric: Despite the large volume of new ideas introduced in this lesson, most students find this lesson relatively easy. This is because the technical challenge of playing the song is quite low compared to the reading challenge. Ensure that your student is looking at all parts of the note. They should be able to correctly identify a note's rhythmic value, finger, and hand by eye on their own.
Assigned Song: Middle C March (5x), Sightreading (1x)
Review Songs: Men From Mars (1x), Ode to Joy (1x), Sea Story (1x), Hey, Mr. Half Note Dot (1x), Alouette (1x)
