Primer: Unit 02, Lesson 4

Rhythm: The Whole Note

The Whole Note, Counting Out Loud, Mixed Rhythms, Repeat Signs

Goal: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to identify whole notes and their parts (open note head, no stem), differentiate whole notes by ear from half notes or quarter notes, and play whole notes to a steady beat set by the teacher. This is also the first 2-page song the student has played. It may take two weeks to complete.

Metric: Ensure your student is saying "1 -2-3-4" out loud while playing. Listen carefully to the release of each whole note. Ensure that your student is holding each whole note all the way through the end of the note and not releasing early.

Assigned Song: Old MacDonald Had a Song

Review Songs: The Old Clock (1x), The Walking Song (1x), Tightrope Walker (1x), The I Like Song (1x), I Hear the Echo (1x)
